Gymnasts Fall to Michigan and Ohio State

Spartans Get Best of Illini Gymnasts - 1/31/99

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite taking the top two spots in the all-around and winning four events, the Illinois men's gymnastics team fell to Michigan State by a score of 226.90-225.475 Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.

With the loss, the Illini fall to 0-3 on the season and in the Big Ten.

Junior, seven-time all-american Travis Romagnoli (Jr., Aurora, Ontario) won the all-around with a season-high score of 57.30, with Leo Oka placing second. Romagnoli also won the high bar (9.85) and tied for first in the vault (9.55). Senior Tuscola-native Kurt Hettinger tied for first on the parallel bars with a 9.65, while Leo Oka (So., Scarborough, Ontario) took first on floor with a 9.675.

The Illini will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 6 as they open their home season against the third-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
