Gymnasts Fall to Michigan and Ohio State - 1/29/99
The seventh-ranked Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team fell to second-ranked Michigan and No. 4 Ohio State in key dual meets Friday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Buckeyes inched past Michigan by a score of 228.325-227.550, followed by the Illini with 222.950. With the losses, Illinois falls to 0-2 on the season and in the conference.
Travis Romagnoli (Jr., Aurora, Ontario), defending NCAA all-around national champion, placed third in the all-around competition, while finishing second on both the vault and high bar. Other notable performances came from sophomore Greg Cook (Batavia, Illinois) with a career-high 9.70 on parallel bars for third place. Junior Linh Hoang (Houston, Texas) also recorded outstanding marks on floor (9.5) and vault (9.55) for top-10 finishes.
"Our main downfall tonight was on pommel horse," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "You can'T expect to win meets in the Big Ten if you struggle on certain events like we did tonight. We will definitely be concentrating on pommel horse next week."
The Illini finish the road weekend with a dual meet at Michigan State on Sunday. Start time is set for 1 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
