Illini Fourth at Windy City Invite - 1/16/99
The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team opened the 1999 season with a fourth place finish at the UIC-hosted Windy City Invitational tonight in Chicago.
Travis Romagnoli (Jr., Aurora, Ontario), defending NCAA all-around national champion, led the Illini with a second-place finish in the all-around competition with a 56.250 mark. He took first on the parallel bars and third on the high bar with a score of 9.70.
With a team score of 223.40, the sixth-ranked Illini finished behind top-ranked Iowa (226.675), No. 3 Ohio State (225.00) and No. 9 Michigan (224.05).
"For a first meet, we will accept this performance, but we now know that we need to get back into the gym and work on many areas, mainly the rings," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "But the positive of this meet was that we were three points from the top."
The Illini will be back in action with a key conference weekend at Michigan and Michigan State on January 29 and 31.
