All-Around Finals Results | Event Finals Results

LAS VEGAS – Junior Mike Wilner, RS sophomore C.J. Maestas, and freshman Chandler Eggleston wrapped up competition at the 2014 Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday evening. Maestas finished in the top ten in the all-around, and all three gymnasts placed in the top 15 of their respective events.

"It's a bittersweet feeling," said head coach Justin Spring. "You go out there to make the national team, and our guys just missed it. Overall our guys did really well and I'm very proud of them."

Mike Wilner competed on rings and floor exercise this weekend, coming out of competition with a No. 12 finish on still rings, with scores of 14.650 and 14.050 for a total of 28.700. On floor, Wilner came in at No. 32, with a Thursday score of 13.600 and a Saturday score of 12.500 for a combined 26.100.

Maestas finished at No. 3 in two of his events, still rings and floor. On rings, Maestas scored 15.000 and 15.550 for a combined 30.550. On floor, he scored 15.200 in both rounds for a 30.400. Maestas was No. 25 on pommel horse, scoring 11.800 and 12.100 for a 23.900. On vault, he came in at No. 17 with a 14.450 and 14.500 for a 28.950. Maestas’ combined score of 27.850 earned him the No. 17 spot on parallel bars, where he scored 13.550 and 14.300, individually. On high bar, Maestas held at No. 11 with 13.600 and 14.350 for a combined 27.950. In the overall, Maestas came in at No. 10 with a total of 169.600 for the weekend.

Eggleston was the highlight of the night for the Illini, taking home the vault title with a 30.450 total (15.100, 15.350). The Jamestown, N.C. native also competed on floor, parallel bar, and high bar. On floor, Eggleston finished at No. 8, combining his 14.400 and 15.400 for 29.800. On parallel bars, he came in at No. 21 with a total of 26.900 (13.100, 13.800). Eggleston’s final event was high bar, where he finished at No. 6, with a combined score of 28.500 (14.150, 14.350). 

Future Illini Bobby Baker was also competeing this weekend in the junior division, where he came in the No. 15 spot with a total of 164.900. Baker is a current high school senior at Lemont High School who will be joining the Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team this coming fall.

After the upcoming week off, the Illini will return to action on March 8, when they will host UIC for Gym Jam along with the women’s team at 4 p.m. CT.
