LAS VEGAS - After one day of competition, seven Illini advanced to the finals at the 2011 U.S. Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas on Thursday. Senior Paul Ruggeri was the top finisher for Illinois, placing sixth with 46 points in the performance-based points ranking system. A total of 43 athletes qualified for the Winter Cup Finals, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5 beginning at 7:15 p.m. PT/9:15 p.m. CT.
Former Illini Wes Haagensen and junior Tyler Mizoguchi finished close behind in seventh and eighth, respectively, with 45 points each, followed by senior Daniel Ribeiro (17th; 29 points), former Illini Luke Stannard (19th; 27), senior Chad Wiest (24th; 21) and freshman Jordan Valdez (33rd; 15).
Ruggeri finished the night tied for 10th place in the all-around with a score of 83.350, placed third on high bar (15.650) and fourth on floor exercise (15.100), while Ribeiro captured the lone first-place finish on the day, tying his career-best score on pommel horse with a 16.000, and Wiest took third on floor (15.300). Mizoguchi finished tied for 16th in the all-around with a score of 81.850 and also placed sixth on floor (15.050) and parallel bars (15.200). Rounding out the group of current team members was Valdez, who finished 27th in the all-around (79.450) and tied for sixth on high bar (14.150).
Haagensen, competing for Team Hilton HHonors, placed 15th in the all-around (81.950) and second on rings (15.100), and Stannard took fourth on pommel horse (14.550).
The final all-around and individual event rankings will be based on combined scores from both days. Live scoring and video for the finals will be available HERE.
