Champaign, Ill. - Illinois junior Thomas Pieters will be back in action this weekend, competing in the Sun Bowl/Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic. The event is open to returning first-team Division I All-Americans as well as the Division II and Division III Players of the Year and played at El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas.
The College All-American Golf Classic is sponsored by the Sun Bowl and has been held each year since 1974. It has featured a number of future PGA starts, including Davis Love III, Tiger Woods, Ricky Barnes and Webb Simpson. The tournament's alumni have won 571 PGA Tour events and earned over $1.4 billion on tour.
Pieters becomes the second Illinois golfer in the last four years to participate in the College All-American Golf Classic, joining former NCAA champion Scott Langley, who played in 2009 and 2010. The native of Niljen, Belgium, Pieters won the 2012 NCAA Championship and took medalist honors at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. The first-team All-Big Ten selection is 17th in the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The Classic begins on Sunday with Titleist Long Drive Contest, the Ping Putting Contest and the College-Am Round. The 36-hole tournament is slated for Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 19-20.

Two-time Big Ten champion Luke Guthrie, meanwhile, is participating in the Callaway Pebble Beach Invitational. The tournament pairs players from the PGA, the LPGA, the Champions and Web.com tour as well as selected amateurs. Guthrie, who is finishing his business degree at Illinois, finished second on the Web.com tour money list to earn his PGA tour card for 2013. Former Illini and PGA tour player D.A. Points joins Guthrie in the tournament, which is Nov. 15-18 at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Del Monte.
