Champaign, Ill. - Illinois head coach Mike Small announced the signing of Alex Burge (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) and Brian Campbell (Irvine, Calif./Mater Dei H.S.) to national letters of intent.
Burge finished second in the IHSA Class 2A State Tournament in 2008 then followed that up with a third place at the state meet in 2009. This season Burge won six in-season tournaments and led the Raiders to both the Big 12 Conference and Intercity Championships, earning medalist honors at the Big 12 meet. On the junior circuit, Burge won the 2008 IJGA Bettinardi Classic in Bloomington and qualified for the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur. He chose Illinois over Auburn, Vanderbilt and North Carolina.
Campbell is ranked No. 88 in the nation's junior rankings by Golfweek and chose Illinois after visiting Oregon, USC and Oklahoma State. He won the AJGA Mission Hills Desert Junior event and placed in the top 20 in three other AJGA events.
"We're excited to add Alex and Brian to the Illini golf program," said Small from Orlando, where he is playing in the PGA event this weekend. "They are both loaded with great potential with a great upside to their games. We look forward to them not only accepting the challenge in the classroom, but also on the golf course. We think they are going to play a big part in the future of Illinois golf."
