URBANA, Ill. -- The Fighting Illini men's golf team is hosting its first tournament in the area since 1988. In first round action of the Northern Intercollegiate at Stone Creek Golf Club today, Illinois tied with Iowa for sixth place with a team total of 298. Purdue and Miami (Ohio) are leading the 18 team tournament field. Both schools shot a team total of 291 in the opening round. Second round action was suspended because of darkness. The second round will be completed at 7:15 a.m. Sunday at Stone Creek with the third and final round scheduled to follow at 9 a.m.
Three golfers shot rounds of 2-under par 70 to start the tournament. Matt Abbott of Penn State, who won the 1999 Northern, is tied for first with Indiana's Mike Castleforte and Xavier's Tim Smith. Four competitors shot opening rounds of 1-under 71 to tie for fourth place.
Illinois' Geoff Lound is among the golfers tied at 1-under. Senior Tim Riley shot an opening round of 75 to tie for 29th. Larry Nuger is tied with teammate Evan Olson for 37th after both golfers shot rounds of 76 today. In his first collegiate round, freshman Ryan Tendall shot a 77. The North Potomac, Md. native is tied for 50th in his college debut.
The 2000 Northern Intercollegiate will conclude Sunday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana.
