Sept. 29, 2000

Urbana, Ill. - After finishing fourth out of 24 teams in the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. last weekend, the Fighting Illini men's golf team has returned home to host the Northern Intercollegiate at Stone Creek Golf Club in Urbana. Tee times for round one start at 7:15 a.m. Saturday with the second round to follow at 12:15. Action continues on Sunday as the final round tees off from Stone Creek at 8 a.m. The Illini have not hosted a men's golf tournament in Champaign-Urbana since head coach Mike Small finished second in the 1988 Big Ten Championships at the Orange and Blue Golf Course in Savoy.

Toledo is the only team from the 1999 tournament that will not be at Stone Creek Golf Club on Saturday morning. The 12 other teams from 1999 are (in order of finish) Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue, Illinois, Marshall, Penn State, Miami (Ohio), Ball State, Iowa, Indiana and Akron. Six teams have been added to the Northern field in 2000. Those teams are Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Notre Dame, Western Kentucky and Xavier.

Seven of the top 15 finishers from the 1999 Northern Intercollegiate will test their skills in Urbana this weekend. Matt Abbott of Penn State took first place last year. He returns to defend his Northern title. Purdue's Chris Mayson also placed in the top five in 1999. This year he looks to improve on his fourth place finish from a year ago. Larry Nuger was the top finisher for the Illini in 1999. He tied for seventh place with Nathan Clark of Michigan State. They will both take part in this year's tournament. Six golfers tied for ninth place last year. Of those six, Lee Williamson of Purdue, Wisconsin's Jim Lemon and David Wagonseller of Ohio State will try to break into the top five on a tough Stone Creek course.

Last year the Illini finished sixth at the Northern Intercollegiate held at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The Northern is the fall tournament played annually on the same course where the Big Ten Championships will be held in the spring. The Illini will host the men's golf Big Ten Championships at Stone Creek Golf Club May 4-6, 2001.
