PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Junior Mason Jacobs was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, announced Wednesday by the conference office. The Metropolis, Ill., native carded a 54-hole score of 216 (+6) at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational en route to an 11th-place finish individually, the highest finish by a conference golfer at the event.
Jacobs led the No. 13 Illini to a tie for eighth place in a loaded field that featured 10 nationally ranked teams. He turned in a pair of even-par 70 rounds over the weekend and moved up eight spots on the leaderboard on the final day. This is the first weekly honor of his career, and the first accolade by an Illini golfer since Luke Guthrie garnered the honor on April 27, 2011.
Illinois will be off this weekend before returning to action in two weeks at the D.A. Weibring Invitational in Normal, Ill., from Oct. 1-2.
