Sept. 11, 2009
Champaign, Ill. - The University of Illinois men's golf team was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America's (GCAA) All-Academic team, an award given to college golf programs that achieve outstanding academic success. Illinois was one of only 45 Division I schools to receive this honor, including three schools from the Big Ten. The GCAA's All-Academic award is given to college golf programs that achieve a combined team GPA of 3.0 or better.
In addition to the team academic award, three Illini men's golfers were also awarded with individual academic awards. Chris DeForest, Scott Langley, and Clayton Parkhill were named Academic All-Big Ten for the spring 2009 semester.
The Illini matched their accomplishments in the classroom with big victories on the course last year. Their most successful season in recent memory, the Illini led the nation with seven tournament victories as a team and at one point reached the no. 1 ranking in the country. They also won their first Big Ten title in 21 years and advanced to their second straight NCAA Championship. The Illini return all seven players from last year's squad and begin the season ranked no. 12 in the nation.
