Hawthorn Woods, Ill. - Illinois coach Mike Small came up just short in his bid for his fifth Illinois Open title. Small tied Justin Fetcho of McCleansboro for second at three-under par to win just over $11,000 in prize money.

At the age of 21, Joe Emerich became the first amateur to win the event since 2000. Emerich carded a final round 69 (-3) to win the Championship by two strokes over defending champion Small and Justin Fetcho

"I had a great day. He wasn't quite on his game and it was still really close," Emerich commented on his round with Small. "It's a testament to how great of a golfer he really is. He is the man to beat in Illinois golf."

Small's chance to tie Gary Pinns' record for the most victories (5) in the history of the event was hindered by four bogeys.

Emerich's final round wasn't free from its oddities. Michael Schachner, Libertyville, began the final round only two shots behind Small, but dropped back after receiving a two-stroke penalty when he inadvertently played Emerich's ball from the fairway on the eighth hole.

Administered by the Illinois PGA since 1950, the Illinois Open has historical roots dating back to 1922. The "state championship of golf" is a 54-hole championship contested over three days to determine the finest player in the state of Illinois. The tournament is open to professionals and amateurs with a handicap of 10 or less who reside within the state of Illinois. Qualifying events conducted throughout the month of June finalize the championship field to the top 156 players.
