Norman, Okla. - Both Illinois teammates, senior Zach Barlow and sophomore Luke Guthrie, advanced out of the stroke-play round Tuesday at the United States Public Links Championship. Guthrie finished the 36 holes at +2 tied for 10th of the 156 competitors while Barlow is tied for 23rd at +4.
Guthrie will enter the 64-man Match Play Tournament as the 11th seed and will face 54th seed Ryan Perez of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, in the first round beginning at 12:30 pm Wednesday at the Jimmie Austin/Oklahoma University Golf Course in Norman, Okla. Barlow is the 29th seed in the tournament and will face 36th seed Alton Anderson, Jr., of Thousand Oaks, Calif., at 9:21 am.
Second and third round matches are slated for Thursday with quarterfinal and semifinal rounds scheduled for Friday and the 36-hole final for Saturday.
Guthrie followed up a first-round one-under par 70 with a three-over par 74 in round two, which included four birdies.
"I hit it okay today, but struggled a lit bit with the putter," Guthrie said. "To finish in the top 10 in a big tournament shows some progression is happening. I just want to now take it one round at a time and hopefully the hard work will pay off."
Barlow had two birdies in his first five holes en route to a second-round 74.
"It was a difficult day because of the wind," Barlow said. "I grounded out a halfway decent round, though. It definitely helped knowing when I finished that I was inside the cut line."
