Steve Stricker will wear his Illini orange in the John Deere Classic second round on Friday.
July 11, 2012
Slivis, Ill. - There is a buzz around the golf world this week as former Illini great Steve Stricker goes for four straight titles at this weekend's John Deere Classic at the TPC John Deere in Silvis, Ill. As is becoming customary, the tournament also has its share of Illini flare even outside of Stricker, who could become one of the few people in the history of golf to win the same tournament in four consecutive years.
Two-time Big Ten champion Luke Guthrie, who tees up for his second professional tournament after placing 19th in his PGA debut last month in Memphis, and D.A. Points, owner of a PGA tour victory at the 2011 Pebble Beach Pro-Am, join Stricker as Illinois alums in the field.
Once again this year, all three men will wear orange during Friday's second round as part of Illini Day at the event and Illinois fans are encouraged to do the same. Fans are also invited to join members of the University of Illinois Foundation and Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at a tent between the seventh and ninth tee boxes where there will be giveaways such as posters and schedule cards. Several Illinois coaches, including the coach of the four-time defending Big Ten champion Illini golf team Mike Small, will stop by throughout the day.
