June 25, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois golfer Thomas Detry and his European teammates will begin play against Team USA at the 2014 Palmer Cup Thursday at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event featuring collegiate players from the United States and Europe. The United States leads the Palmer Cup 9-7-1.
Detry will begin play alongside Arizona State's Jon Rahm in a foursome match against Alabama teammates Trey Mullinax and Robby Shelton Thursday at 1:44 a.m. CT. Afternoon four-ball matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with pairings to be determined.
A native of Brussels, Belgium, Detry is the third Fighting Illini golfer in the last five years to play in the Palmer Cup. Thomas Pieters competed for Europe in 2012, while Scott Langley represented the United States in 2010.
Detry, currently the No. 12 amateur in the world, earned his first career All-America honor after a strong sophomore campaign in 2013-14. He ranked third on the team with a 71.62 season stroke average, marking the first time in school history that three Illini have recorded averages better than 72 in a campaign. He notched his first career victory at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate and posted five top-10 finishes on his way to unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors. Detry had nine top-25 finishes and posted 15 rounds under par, including a career-best 5-under 65 in the second round of the NCAA Championships.
