CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fighting Illini senior-to-be Brian Campbell talked with media Thursday about playing in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 June 12-15. It will be his first appearance in a U.S. Open and he will be one of five current or former Illinois players in the field, along with Steve Stricker, D.A. Points, Luke Guthrie and Scott Langley.

Campbell qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open by tying for fourth at the Daly City, California, sectional qualifier on June 2. He is coming off an impressive junior season in which he earned All-America honors - the first of his career - by tying for ninth at the 2014 NCAA Championships, including a final-round 63 that tied the course record at Prairie Dunes (at the configuration used for the NCAA Championships). He also was named the 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year and broke Luke Guthrie's single-season stroke average record with a 71.08 mark.

Campbell won two tournaments and finished with seven top-10s and 10 top-25 finishes in 12 starts. He also tied school records for 18-hole (63) and 36-hole scores (131), and broke the 54-hole school record with a 197, the second-best score in Big Ten history.
