CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Six University of Illinois athletic teams earned the NCAA Public Recognition Award based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR), the NCAA announced Wednesday. Illini baseball, men's and women's golf, women's gymnastics, soccer and women's tennis teams all earned the honor, which is bestowed to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent of their sport nationally for the four-year period ending with 2011-12. The six teams equals the school record for most Illinois teams honored, matching the mark from 2004-05, the first year of the program.

Illinois is one of 61 schools to receive Public Recognition Awards in each of the program's eight years. The six Illinois teams to earn the honor this year tied the Illini with Ohio State for the third-most squads earning Public Recognition Awards among Big Ten schools behind Northwestern's 14 sports and Penn State's eight sports.

The NCAA recognized 976 teams across the country: 594 women's teams and 382 men's or mixed squads. The Big Ten boasted 53 teams earning Public Recognition Awards, 27 on the women's side and 26 on the men's. The Orange and Blue soccer team was one of only two Big Ten women's soccer squads recognized, while the Illini baseball and men's golf teams were one of only three Big Ten squads to earn the honor. Four Big Ten women's gymnastics teams, five women's golf teams and six women's tennis teams collected the accolade, with Illinois being represented in each.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

This year's APR rates are based on data from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. Full APR data for all teams will be announced June 11.
