Champaign, Ill. - Fifty-one University of Illinois student-athletes earned spring Academic All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced Thursday. The list includes Illini baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's track and field student-athletes who are in at least their second academic year at Illinois and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

The 51 Academic All-Big Ten honorees is the most in any season for Illinois in 2011-12 and brings the Illini's total Academic All-Big Ten selections to 141 (fall - 44; winter - 47; spring - 50). Sixteen Illini men's track and field student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, along with 10 women's track and field student-athletes, nine baseball players, six softball players, three each from men's golf, women's golf and women's tennis, and one from men's tennis.

Among Illinois' honorees were Big Ten Medal of Honor winner, Big Ten men's golf Player of the Year and two-time medalist at the Big Ten Championships Luke Guthrie; first-team All-Big Ten outfielder Willie Argo; second-team NFCA All-Midwest Region and second-team All-Big Ten pitcher Pepper Gay; two-time outdoor track and field second-team All-Big Ten selection Jesica Ejesieme; and indoor track and field second-team All-Big Ten honoree Cody Wisslead.

The conference office also will present the Distinguished Scholar Award in July. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
