Long Grove, Ill. - Illini men's golf head coach Mike Small has dominated two of the four major events on the Illinois PGA schedule in recent years, winning five of the last six Illinois PGA Section Championships and three of the last four Illinois Open Championships. Small has now increased his victory total to three of the four majors after capturing the 44th Illinois PGA Match Play Championship today at Kemper Lakes Golf Course. In his first time competing in the match play event, Small won the title with a 1-Up victory over top seed Roy Biancalana in the championship match this afternoon.
Small was the No. 3 seed in the event, which began on Monday, and received a first-round bye. On Tuesday, he defeated No. 62 Tony Malatesta, 5 & 3, in round two and No. 35 Adam McDaid, 5 & 4, in round three. Yesterday, he defeated No. 14 Michael Harrigan, 5 & 4, in round four and No. 11 Danny Mulhearn, 3 & 2, in the quarterfinal. Small defeated No. 2 seed Jim Sobb, 4 & 3 in this morning's semifinal prior to his title-clinching victory over Biancalana.
