May 22, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Four University of Illinois golfers were named to the PING All-Midwest Region team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday. Junior Brian Campbell, sophomores Charlie Danielson and Thomas Detry, and senior Jonathan Hauter earned the honor, marking the second straight year and fourth time in the last six years that at least four Fighting Illini have been named to the squad. It is the second career All-Region honor for Campbell, Danielson and Detry, while it is Hauter's first All-Region laurel.
Campbell, the Big Ten Player of the Year, leads Illinois with a 71.26 season stroke average, currently the second-best average in school history behind Luke Guthrie's 71.19 record from 2011-12. Campbell has two tournament victories, including the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional, a team-high six top-10 finishes and nine top-25s. Danielson is second on the squad with a 71.36 average, shared medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships and won the Les Bolstad Award with the lowest season stroke average through the Big Ten Championships. He has four top-10s and nine top-25s on the year.
Detry holds a 71.62 season stroke average and has one tournament title to his credit. He has posted four consecutive top-12 finishes, has finished in the top 10 five times and in the top 25 nine times. Hauter has a career-best 73.68 season stroke average in 2013-14 to go along with three top-10s and seven top-25s. He also has posted 10 rounds under par this season after entering the year with two in his career.
The Illini open play at the NCAA Championships Friday at 1:10 p.m. at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Illinois, the No. 8 seed, is paired with seventh-seeded Washington and ninth-seeded Virginia Tech.
