Champaign, Ill. - The Illinois men's golf team is headed back to the NCAAs. On Monday, the Illini received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Central Regional. The event will be hosted by Ohio State at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
The Illini are the 18th seed in the 27-team regional and are one of seven Big Ten teams invited. Illinois is coming off a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships April 25-27. The top ten teams plus the top two individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the NCAA Championships May 28-31 on the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The Illini finished sixth in a 14-team competitive field at Boilermaker Invitational held on that course April 19-20.
Illinois is ranked 52nd in the latest Golfweek National Ratings. Top-ranked Alabama headlines the Central Regional field that also includes four other Big Ten teams - Indiana, Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State. The Illini have faced teams many of the teams in the regional at some point during the season, including No. 2 Oklahoma State. Two other Regionals - the East Regional in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the West Regional in Bremerton, Wash., will also be held the same weekend.
