April 9, 2014
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Illinois sophomore Thomas Detry was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Wednesday after tying for fourth place at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday. The Brussels, Belgium, native carded an 8-under-par 208 during the tournament that featured three top-10 teams and seven ranked among the top 25 in the latest Golf Digest/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll.
It marks the fourth weekly award for an Illini player this spring and fifth this season. The weekly honor is the second of the season and third of his career for Detry, who also was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week on March 12, 2014, and Feb. 13, 2013.
Detry, who is on the Ben Hogan Award watch list as one of the nation's top collegiate golfers, recorded the second-best 54-hole score of his career with the 208 at Augusta, with all three rounds standing under par. His 4-under-par 68 in Saturday's second round and his 69 on Sunday each were the third-best score in the respective round. He now has four top-five finishes this season, including two in Illinois' last three events, and shares the team lead with 13 rounds under par in 2013-14. He moved into the team lead in spring stroke average with a 70.33 mark over 12 rounds, and is only two strokes behind Brian Campbell in overall season stroke average, trailing Campbell by a margin of 0.09 strokes per round (70.54 to 70.63).
The eighth-ranked Illini posted their sixth top-five finish of the 2013-14 campaign at the 3M Augusta Invitational on Sunday, and have won three tournaments this season. Illinois has this weekend off from competition before returning to the course at the Boilermaker Invitational on Purdue's Kampen Course on April 19-20. The Orange and Blue will then commence their quest for a sixth-straight Big Ten Championship May 2-4 at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind.
