Danielson, Detry Named Big Ten Co-Golfers of the Week
March 12, 2014
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Illinois sophomores Charlie Danielson and Thomas Detry were named Big Ten Co-Golfers of the Week on Wednesday after tying for second place at the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday. The pair fired matching 209s (-7) in the tournament, finishing two shots behind individual medalist Myles Lewis of LSU. It marks the second-straight week and third week this season that a member of the Illini team earned the weekly accolade, as Brian Campbell earned weekly accolades on March 5 and Oct. 9.
It is the second career weekly honor for Detry, who also was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Feb. 13, 2013, after leading the Illini to the 2013 Big Ten Match Play Championship. The laurel is the first of Danielson's career.
Detry, who is on the Ben Hogan Award watch list as one of the nation's top collegiate golfers, tied the second-best 54-hole score of his career with the 209 (71-68-70) and his 4-under-par 68 in the second round equaled the second-best 18-hole score of his career. He now has four top-six finishes in the six tournaments he has played in 2013-14, with nine of his 18 rounds under par. In addition, he has shot below par in five consecutive rounds this spring.
Danielson's 209 (71-69-69) is the third-best 54-hole score of his career and he now has three top-four finishes in five tournaments in which he has been eligible for the individual race. Ten of his 17 rounds this season have been under par, including his last four and five of his six rounds this spring.
The sixth-ranked Illini won their third tournament title of the 2013-14 campaign at the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday, earning the trophy at that event for the second-straight season and the third time in the last four years. Illinois has next week off from competition before returning to the course at the Floridian Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Houston, at The Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla., March 24-25.
