CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois junior Thomas Pieters was named to the 27-man watch list for the 2013 Ben Hogan Award on Wednesday, which is the award presented annually to the top men's collegiate golfer considering all college and amateur competitions during the previous 12-month period. The award is presented by Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts, Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
This marks the second-straight year that Pieters has been included on the award's watch list and marks the fourth-straight season that Illinois has had at least one golfer on the list, the third-longest active streak in the nation behind Stanford (eight) and Alabama (six).
A list of 10 semifinalists, which could include players not on the watch list, will be announced on April 18, with three finalists being named on May 8. The winner will be announced at a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club on May 20 prior to the start of the PGA Tour's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Pieters and the Illini began the season last weekend with a victory over Illinois State at the annual Tinervin Cup. They return to action Feb. 8-9 in the Big Ten Match Play Championships at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
