Illinois is still in the hunt heading into the final day of The Wolverine @ Mission Inn. The Illini are in fourth place as a team in the ten-team event, and sophomore Zach Barlow (Percy, Ill./Trico H.S.) stands fifth individually after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
At +13 583, Illinois stands just one stroke behind Colorado and No. 20 Penn State for second. Host Michigan leads the event at +7 583.
For the fourth time this season, Illinois has an individual within striking distance of the tournament title heading into the final round. Barlow had one of just four scores in the 60s on the day with a 69 in the second round on the 6,923-yard par 72 course. He is at even par 144, just two strokes behind co-leaders Tim Schaetzel of Michigan and Cole Peevler of Iowa. Barlow played consistent golf with a tournament leading 28 pars to go along with three birdies on the par fives. He played a bogey free second round.
Illinois finished the day well with a 287 in the second round, two strokes better than Michigan (289) and behind only Penn State (284) and Colorado (285). Freshman Scott Langley (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South H.S.) birdied five of his last eight holes and junior Larry Blatt (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg H.S.) birdied three of his last six to move the Illini into contention for the overall team lead.
The tournament, which features a lot of the top teams in the Midwest, allows for five players to compete on the team and a handful of individuals to play as well. One of those individuals, Illinois sophomore Matt Hoffman (Thornhill, Ontario/St. Robert Catholic H.S.), had the best Illinois score of the first round with a 74. He backed it up with another two-over par round to sit in a tie for 11th at +4. Langley (77-71) and junior Jon Krick (Peoria Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) (75-73) are among those in that tie.
Blatt (75-74) had eight birdies overall in his two rounds and is one stroke behind that gaggle of players at +5 good for a tie for 18th. Senior Mark Ogren (Daphne, Ala./St. Paul's Episcopal H.S.) (77-80) is tied for 50th at +13.
"It's fun to compete in this type of environment," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "The more times we're in contention, the more it's going to help us in the spring."
