Illini up to third at Turtle Bay

No. 6 Illinois has one more round left in the fall season -- that comes Wednesday afternoon at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii. Round two saw the Illini jump one place up to a tie for third in the 12-team tournament. Illinois shot a one-over par 289 as a team Tuesday and is tied with Long Beach State for third at +3 for the tournament. Both San Diego State and Santa Clara shot two-under par 286s on Tuesday and hold down the top two spots. SDSU holds a commanding lead at -12 with Santa Clara at even par for the tournament. Individually, Illinois' Zach Barlow shot his low round of the fall with a three-under par 69 on the 7,218 Arnold Palmer Course. He is tied for sixth overall at -1 for the tournament. Sophomore Luke Guthrie, who came into the event ranked 37th nationally according to the Golfstat computer, sunk four birdies en route to a 72, his second straight even par round, and sits in a tie for ninth. Ninth-ranked Scott Langley duplicated Guthrie's effort with four birdies and a 72. Langley is tied for 13th at +2 overall. Junior Chris DeForest is two strokes back at +4 in 19th after shooting 76 while senior Matt Hoffman had an eagle on the 379-yard par four 14th in his round of 78 and is tied for 34th in the 64-man field at +6. Freshman Ross Frankenberg, playing as an individual, is tied for 19th with DeForest at +4 after a second straight 74. San Diego's State's Andrew Cooley paces the tournament at -6 followed by Rick Lamb of Santa Clara (-5), SDSU's Alex Kang (-3) and Johan Carlsson (-2) and Long Beach State's Michael Drake (-2). Barlow is one of eight players under par after 36 holes. The third and final round will be played at the George Fazio course.
