Champaign, Ill. - Illinois is in fifth place after one round of play at The Prestige at PGA West. The Illini shot a team score of +5, 293 in the morning's first round, and the second round of play was called due to darkness.
The Illini played well at the Greg Norman-designed PGA West Course in La Quinta, Calif. (par 72, 7,156 yards), standing fifth in the competitive 18-team field, which includes many programs from the West Coast. There was a lighting delay during the afternoon, and the teams played throughout a steady rain during the second round before play was suspended. UCLA is in first place at 280, while Colorado is in second at 290. Illinois is just two strokes out of third place, behind UC-Irvine and Stanford.
The Illini have two golfers currently in the Top 10 individually in sophomore Danny Zimmerman and junior Kyle Hosick. Zimmerman is tied for fourth after leading the Illini in round one with a 2-under par round of 70. Junior Kyle Hosick also shot below par in the morning, tied for eighth place after carding a 1-under 71. Also scoring for the UI were sophomore Mark Ogren (74) and junior Patrick Nagle (78).
The second round of play at The Prestige will resume Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round.
