Columbus, Ohio - Illinois fell one spot in the team standings, from a tie for 16th to a tie for 17th, following the third round of the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, held at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course (par 71, 7,222 yards). The Illini shot a third-round score of 11-over par 295 today and now have totaled 868 strokes (+16) through 54 holes.
Freshman James Lepp led the Illini today with a 1-over par round of 72. Lepp, now 1-over par for the tournament with a 54-hole score of 214, improved from a tie for 36th to a tie for 29th place in the individual standings. Right behind Lepp was junior Geoff Lound, who shot a 2-over 73, shaving three-strokes from yesterday's second-round 76. Lound is now tied for 60th individually at 4-over par (217).
Rounding out the scoring four for the Illini were a pair of freshmen, with Mike O'Neal carding a 3-over 74 and Garrett Chaussard tallying a 5-over 76. Chaussard fell to a tie for 66th individually, while O'Neal improved 16 places from yesterday to a tie for 116th place.
Looking at the team standings, Georgia Tech is 1-over par for the tournament (853), one stroke ahead of second-place Tulsa (854) and two strokes better than third-place Washington (855). Individually, Alabama-Birmingham's Graeme McDowell fired a 67 today to take over the leaderboard at 8-under par through 54 holes (205). McDowell owns a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan (-7), and a two-shot lead over Washington's Brock Mackenzie (-6).
The fourth and final round of the 72-hole NCAA Men's Golf Championship will be held on Saturday. The Illini will tee-off beginning at 11 a.m. CST.
