Heavy Rains Wash Out Illini at NCAA Championships
May 23, 2014
HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Heavy rain and flash flooding hampered the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club on Friday, with teams in the afternoon wave - which included Illinois - unable to even tee off. Teams in the morning wave were able to play some golf at times throughout the day, but even the first players in the lead group completed only 11 holes before play was suspended for the evening at 5:50 p.m. Teams waited through eight hours and 10 minutes of weather delays, including a 40-minute delay prior to the day's first shot.
The top 15 seeds in the 30-team field never got on the course on Friday, as the start of the day was delayed by lightning in the area, then two more lengthy delays meant the final players on the morning-wave teams completed only one hole.
Teams who had rounds in progress will resume play at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with successive teams falling in behind.
