WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After 36 holes of the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday, Illinois (+13) sits in third place, just two shots back of tournament leaders No. 21 Kent State and No. 25 Iowa at +11. The Illini opened the day with a 297 (+9) and improved by five strokes in the afternoon with a 292 (+4), totaling a 589 through two rounds at Purdue's Kampen Course. Three Illini are among the top-11 individuals, led by senior Luke Guthrie in a tie for seventh.
"We are in position to have a good day tomorrow and compete for the title," head coach Mike Small said. "We started off blazing in the morning and got to 8-under at one point. We played pretty solid most of the day and just had a three-hole stretch where we gave back about 15 to 17 shots, which is really rare and won't happen to us much. I was impressed with how well we started off, but then we just struggled a little bit in that stretch."
Guthrie carded an even-par 72 in the morning and followed it up with a 74 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 146 (+2). The Quincy, Ill., native rolled in seven birdies on the day but finished both rounds with a double bogey on No. 14. Sophomore Thomas Pieters and freshmen Brian Campbell are tied for 11th after tallying identical first and second round scores of 75-72 to finish the day at 147 (+3). Pieters had seven birdies on the day, while Campbell notched five.
"Luke expects more and wants more, but he played solid," Small said. "He doubled the same hole to finish off both rounds, but he will make up for that tomorrow. It was unfortunate to have that happen, but he and the rest of the guys will come out tomorrow ready to go."
Redshirt junior Mason Jacobs counted both of his scores at the event, turning in rounds of 75-74. He is tied for 22nd overall at 149 (+5). Freshman Alex Burge is tied for 34th at 152 (+8) following rounds of 77-75.
"To play all day without a red number and still be in position to win is a positive," Small said. "It means we had a team effort overall, but tomorrow we will need some guys to put up low numbers."
Wichita State's Rafael Becker leads the field by four strokes as the only individual under par at -4. Sunday's third and final round is slated for tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m. CT off No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com while full results and a recap of the tournament can be found on fightingillini.com.
