Junior Patrick Nagle carded his best round of the spring, a 3-under par 68, to lead the Illini on Saturday during the first round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.

Tempe, Ariz. - The Fighting Illini men's golf team carded its seventh-best 36-hole score in school history today during the opening day of the 34th annual Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational, held at the par 71, 7,017-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Illinois shot rounds of 285 and 282, its two best rounds of the 2005-06 season, good for a 36-hole total of 567 which ranks seventh in the all-time UI records book. Illinois is currently in seventh place out of 16 teams at 1-under par.
San Diego State and UNLV are tied atop the team standings at 549, while Kansas State's Ben Kern leads the individual race at -8 with a score of 134.
The Illini had solid performances throughout the lineup which resulted in a strong team performance. Junior Patrick Nagle, who carries a streak of four consecutive top-10 finishes into this weekend, led the way in round one with a three-under par 68, marking his lowest round of the spring and his second lowest round of the season. Fellow junior Kyle Hosick shot an even-par 71 and sophomores Mark Ogren and Frank Alafoginis each shot 73 to tally the Illini's final two scores of the opening round.
In the afternoon round, Hosick and Ogren each carded 1-under rounds of 70 to lead the way, with Hosick's 70 marking a season-low score. Alafoginis and senior Blair Harkins added the other scores of round two, each tying their career-low rounds with even-par 71s.
Nagle and Hosick are tied for 20th place in the 85-player field at 1-under par with 36-hole totals of 141, while Ogren is tied for 30th at 1-over, 143. Alafoginis is one stroke behind Ogren, tied for 37th at +2 (144), while Harkins is tied for 50th at +4 (146).
The third and final round of the 54-hole Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational will be held on Sunday.
