AUGUSTA, Ga. - After setting the school record 18-hole score on a par-72 course during the second round, Illinois moved up to third place at the Augusta State Invitational at -12 (564) through 36 holes. The Illini, who sit just five shots back of tournament leaders No. 1 Texas and host Augusta State at -17 (559), opened the day with a +3 (291) in the morning before turning in four scores of even-par or better in the afternoon to total a program-best single round of -15 (273) at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
"This was a very positive and encouraging day," head coach Mike Small said. "We have shot a lot of low scores the last few years, but it felt good to be able to do it today with the low round of the afternoon against the top team in the country. It shows our potential and what we are truly capable of."
Illinois boasted the low team score during the second round, paced by a 66 from sophomore Thomas Pieters, who fired a career-best 6-under for the second week in a row and fourth time this season. Redshirt junior Mason Jacobs also had a career-low round with a 5-under 67, while senior Luke Guthrie tallied a 4-under 68 and freshman Alex Burge matched a career low with an even-par 72 to complete the Illini record.
Individually, Pieters and Jacobs both are among the top five on the leaderboard through two rounds. Pieters, who opened the day with a 72, is in fourth at -6 (138). The Nijlen, Belgium, native rolled in seven birdies and holed out an eagle from 90 yards on the par-4 14th during his career-low round. Jacobs, who is tied for fifth at -5 (139), had an eagle in his first round, holing out from 130 yards away on the par-4 10th. The Metropolis, Ill., native carded five birdies on the back-nine of the second round and finished with eight total.
"Thomas and Mason played strong all day," Small said. "They came up big in the afternoon with low rounds along with Luke."
Guthrie is tied for 20th at -2 (142) after bouncing back from a 74 in the morning with a 68 in the afternoon, which included five birdies and only one bogey. Burge is tied for 39th at +1 (145) after rounds of 73 and 72.
TCU's Julien Brun leads the tournament at -11 followed by Augusta State's Taylor Floyd (-10) and Texas' Dylan Frittelli (-9).
Sunday's third and final round is slated for tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT off No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com while full results and a recap of the tournament can be found on fightingillini.com.
