Guthrie Ties for Fourth at Louisiana Classics
March 6, 2012
LAFAYETTE, La. - Following a final round even-par 72, senior Luke Guthrie moved up one spot on the leaderboard and finished tied for fourth at 4-under (212) at the Louisiana Classics. The Quincy, Ill., native picked up the 12th top-five finish of his career and has recorded 12 straight rounds of even-par or better dating back to the fall season. As a team, Illinois shot a final round 301 and placed 11th overall with a 54-hole total of 885 (+21).
"It was a disappointing week," head coach Mike Small said. "We had a good discussion after the meet about how we can use this as an opportunity to improve and get better individually and as a team. Sometimes you need events like this to put things in perspective and figure out where you want to go from here. We have been highly ranked throughout the season but now struggled a bit, so we will reevaluate ourselves to get things going in the right direction. Individually, Luke upheld his end of the bargain and played well which is what an All-American does."
Junior Mason Jacobs turned in a final round 77 and ended in a tie for 32nd at 3-over (219). Freshman Brian Campbell had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 74 and tied for 70th at 13-over (229). Sophomore Jonathan tied for 77th at 14-over (230) after a final round 78 while sophomore Thomas Pieters tied for 81st at 16-over (232) after a final round 82. Freshman Alex Burge competed as an individual and tied for 67th at 11-over (227) following a 77 in the third round.
No. 14 LSU won the 15-team event by 14 strokes at 17-under (847) while also having the top two individuals in medalist Andrew Presley (-10) and runner-up Sang Yi (-7).
Illinois will be off for a couple weeks before returning to action at the Borona Collegiate Cup in San Diego, Calif., from March 22-23.
