Placida, Fla. - Illinois was impressive in its final tune-up for the spring stroke play season. The seventh-ranked Illini posted an 8.5-0.5 victory over Illinois State at the Tinervin Cup Saturday at 7,038-yard Par 71 Coral Creek Golf in Placida, Fla.

The event, now in its eighth year, is put on by dual benefactors Jeff and Madalyn Tinervin, and annually pits the Illini against the in-state rival Redbirds. Illinois is now a perfect 8-0 in Tinverin Cup history.

Illinois took two of the three morning fourball matches, halving the other, and won all six afternoon medal matches. Freshman Jonathan Hauter competed in his first collegiate event and was impressive, teaming with sophomore Mason Jacobs to defeat Drew North and Parker Freiburg, 4&2, then shot a 74 in the afternoon to win his match with Freiberg by one shot.

"It was nice to get his feet wet," said assistant coach Zach Guthrie of Hauter. "His score would have counted among our top four if this had been stroke play, that's pretty good for his first time out."

Indeed Illinois would have put together a strong score had this been a regular tournament with the top four scores of 69, 70, 71, and 74, good for an even par score. Hauter's one point-match was the only one that came down to the wire. Junior Luke Guthrie (69) won his match with Eric Meier (79), by 10 shots and sophomore Mason Jacobs (74), also posted a double-digit victory, downing Drew North (85) by 11 shots.

In other singles matches, senior All-American Scott Langley (70) defeated Jeff Kellen (78); senior Chris DeForest (71) downed Wils Hawn (77) and freshman Thomas Pieters (75) bettered Ricky Heardon (80).

The morning fourball matches were more competitive with Guthrie and Langley edging Meier Kellen, 1 up, and DeForest and Pieters halving their match with Hawn and Heardon.

The Illini are also playing practice rounds at the club on Friday and Sunday this weekend, getting ready for the Louisiana Classics Tournament, which is March 7-8 in Lafayette, La.

"We are looking forward to that tournament," Zach Guthrie said. "It is a transition going from working on your swing to trying to score. I thought we hit the ball well and every player did a nice job of controlling his own game. Today was breezy and the greens were tricky, but I thought we responded well to the conditions."
