Senior Joe Affrunti carded a 6-over par at the Puerto Rico Classic

San Juan, Puerto Rico - In Tuesday's final round of the Puerto Rico Classic, Illinois shot a 301 to give them a three round score of 920, giving the orange and blue a 17th place finish at their first tournament of the spring. Florida came from behind to take the team title with a three round score of nine-under par (855), which was one shot better than defending national champion Clemson (856).
The Puerto Rico Classic is one of the top national tournaments of the spring calendar, with nine of the 18 teams in the field currently ranked in the Top 25 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Tuesday's final-round action was held at the 6,931-yard, par-72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club.
Senior Joe Affrunti led the Illini by carding a third round score of 2-over par 74, placing him in a tie for 41st place with an overall score of 6-over par (222). Junior Garret Chaussard recorded the second best finish for the Illini, shooting a final round 4-over par 76, which was good for 66th place (230). Junior Mike O'Neal had the low round of the day for the Illini, firing a 1-over par 73. O'Neal's 73 helped him move up ten spots to finish tied for 76th place (234). Rounding out the action were senior Ryan Tendall and sophomore Patrick Nagle. Tendall finished with a final round 78, good for 83rd place, while Nagle finished tied for 84th with a 79. Clemson's Matt Hendrix held on to take the individual title, finishing with a score of 9-under par 207.
The Illini return to action March 1-2 at the Cleveland Golf Classic in Westlake Village, California.
