Illinois placed fourth at the inaugural Big Ten Match Play championships at Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla. The top seed Illini fell to fifth-seeded Michigan, 3.5-2.5 in the semifinal then were edged by third-seeded Michigan, 4-2 for third place. Second-seeded Indiana downed Michigan 4-2 in the title match.
Sophomore Chris DeForest won both of his matches on the day, topping Alexander Sitompul of Michgian, 2 UP and Graham Baillargeon of Michigan State 2 & 1.
Sophomore Scott Langley won the other match against Michigan, bettering Lion Kim, 3& 2, while junior Matt Hoffman halved his match with Bill Rankin in the semifinal. Zach Barlow had the Illini's other match victory in the third-place match, defeating Andrew Ladwig, 3&2.
The match with Michigan State came down to the wire with Langley and Luke Guthrie each coming up just short, 2 &1.
Illinois returns to action on Feb. 28 in Florida in a dual match against Illinois State for the Tinervin Cup.
