PLACIDA, Fla. - Illinois remained perfect at the Tinervin Cup, improving to 9-0 all-time against Illinois State at the annual event held at the 7,038-yard Par 71 Coral Creek Golf Club. The Illini earned a 7-2 victory over the Redbirds after sweeping the match play portion and tallying four singles victories in the afternoon.

"It was a good start for our team," head coach Mike Small said. "We came down here to gauge where we are at both mentally and physically with our game. Whenever we compete for our school, we want to win, so we were able to accomplish that. This event did identify some issues we need to work on over the next couple of weeks so we can be competitive this spring."

The event, now in its ninth year, is put on by dual benefactors Jeff and Madalyn Tinervin, and is played in a format comparable to the Ryder Cup, beginning with three two-on-two, head-to-head, better ball matches in a morning session. Each match is worth one point, for a total of three possible points. Six individual head-to-head, stroke-play matches follow the morning session in the afternoon. Each match in the afternoon is worth one point, for a total of six possible points.

The Illini came away with all three points during the morning session. Sophomore Thomas Pieters and freshmen Brian Campbell defeated Wils Hawn and Jordan Fahel while junior Mason Jacobs and sophomore Jonathan Hauter downed Matt Solis and Eric Meier. Senior Luke Guthrie and freshman Alex Burge got past Ricky Hearden and Parker Freiburg to wrap up match play. During the afternoon session, singles victories from Pieters, Guthrie, Campbell and Burge sealed the Illini win.

"Luke and Thomas played pretty well, and Brian Campbell was a positive for us," Small said. "This was the first college golf event for our two freshmen, and I saw positives out of both of them. We didn't finish strong as a team, so we need to address that moving forward."
