    Illini Practice Report - 9/8/98

    UI begins on-field prep for Middle Tennessee State

    Illinois worked out for 1 1/2 hours in pads this afternoon on the East Practice Field at Memorial Stadium in preparation for Saturday's game vs. Middle Tennessee State (6 p.m. CT, Memorial Stadium, Illini Sports Network, No TV). The Illini worked with the first- and second-team units, individual drills and special teams work under sunny skies with temperatures mild in the mid-70's with a cool breeze reaching 10-15 MPH.

    LOYD RETURNS, HARRIS DEPARTS:

    Two junior college student-athletes from Mesa Community College went in different directions today. WR William Loyd cleared his final hurdle and was declared academically eligible. Loyd returned to the practice field this afternoon after missing the WSU trip. CB Johnnie Harris returned to Mesa C.C. to complete academic coursework and will not play for the Illini this fall.

    WAKEFIELD AT PRACTICE:

    Sophomore DE Fred Wakefield, who has missed the last week of practice and did not make the trip to WSU, returned to view practice this afternoon. Wakefield, who suffered from a virus that moved into his chest and heart, reports feeling much better and is working his way back toward playing this season.
