@AstroIllini Addresses Fighting Illini From Space
Dec. 16, 2013
NASA Astronaut, and former Illinois football captain, Col. Mike Hopkins took part in a live video chat from the International Space Station with the current Fighting Illini football team on Monday afternoon. Col. Hopkins, who was deployed on Expedition 37/38 to the ISS in September, is scheduled to return to Earth in March, 2014. The live question and answer session was arranged in cooperation with NASA. Illini players asked questions with Hopkins for 30 minutes and watched from the squad room in Memorial Stadium as Hopkins answered them while orbiting 230 miles above the Earth.
A four-year letterman for the Fighting Illini from 1988-91, Hopkins graduated from the UI with a bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1991 and from Stanford with a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1992. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in January, 1992, and worked his way through the Air Force until he commenced astronaut training in 2008. Col. Hopkins was selected in July 2009 as one of 14 members of the 20th NASA astronaut class.
Video clips of the session with Col. Hopkins will be posted on FightingIllini.com on Tuesday.
