Dec. 9, 2010
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Junior running back Mikel Leshoure earned third-team All-America honors from Rivals.com after posting one of the best seasons by a running back in school history. Heading into the Texas Bowl on Dec. 29, Leshoure has rushed for 1,513 yards and 14 touchdowns, and has caught 15 passes for 175 yards and three scores.
The Champaign, Ill., native ranks second on Illinois' single-season rushing list behind Rashard Mendenhall's 1,681 yards and his 14 rushing TDs are third on the school record list. Leshoure's 17 total touchdowns rank second behind Mendenhall's 19 scores in 2007.
Leshoure also tied Mendenhall's school record of eight 100-yard rushing games in a season in 2010 and his 11 career 100-yard games rank third behind Robert Holcombe (16) and Jim Grabowski (12). Leshoure also ranks 10th on Illinois' career rushing list.
His enduring performance of the season is a 330-yard, two-touchdown effort on 33 carries against Northwestern at Wrigley Field, which broke Holcombe's school record of 315 yards. Leshoure's memorable night also carried the Illini to their sixth win, securing bowl eligibility for the first time in three seasons.
