CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fighting Illini fans at Memorial Stadium for this Saturday's game against Northwestern are being asked to support victims of last week's tornados across the state. Volunteers for the Red Cross will be positioned inside Memorial Stadium entrances taking monetary donations to assist with relief.
"We are pleased to offer an opportunity for Fighting Illini fans to contribute and help the hundreds of people affected by the tornado damage on Nov. 17," said UI Director of Athletics Mike Thomas. "Many of the people who suffered damage are directly connected to many of us within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, bringing this even closer to home. We hope our fans donate generously to help support the relief for all those who have been affected."
Thousands of homes were destroyed or heavily damaged in the storm that spawned several tornados Nov. 17. Communities continue to clean up the debris and begin the rebuilding process. The Red Cross has been on site throughout that effort providing food, water, shelter and other services.
Volunteers will be at the entrances to the stadium before this Saturday's Northwestern game collecting donations to help the Red Cross help neighbors in Gifford, Washington and other communities that were in the path of the storms.
As fans enter the stadium, Red Cross signs will mark the donation locations. Cash and checks will be gratefully accepted. Checks should be made to: "Champaign County Red Cross" with "Illinois tornado victims" written in the memo section.
Funds can also be donated to the Champaign County Red Cross by visiting their website www.redcross.org/oh/springfield/champaign or by texting REDCROSS to 90999 ($10 donation).
