Illinois and Virginia Announce Home-and-Home Series
Oct. 30, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois and University of Virginia have finalized a home-and-home series for the 2021 and 2022 football seasons, both schools announced Wednesday. The Fighting Illini will travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face the Cavaliers on Sept. 11, 2021, with UVA returning the game in Champaign on Sept. 10, 2022.
"This series with Virginia is a great addition to our future schedules," Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas said. "We set out to schedule games against peer institutions and we were able to do that with this series."
The Big Ten will move to a nine-game conference slate starting in 2016, with each team alternating between having five home/four road games and four home/five road games every other year. Though Big Ten schedules have only been released through 2019, if the pattern holds true in 2021, the Illinois-UVA meeting in Charlottesville will fall on a year when Illinois has five Big Ten home games and four road games, keeping the opportunity open for seven Illini home games. Illini would then have four B1G home games and five B1G road games in 2022, when the Cavaliers are set to come to Champaign.
Illinois and Virginia have faced each other twice previously, with both matchups coming in bowl games. The Fighting Illini defeated UVA 31-21 in the 1990 Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando and then trounced the Cavaliers 63-21 nine years later in the 1999 MicronPC.com Bowl in Miami.
