PARK RIDGE, Ill. - University of Illinois sophomore Jonathan Brown (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Fighting Illini to a 17-14 victory over No. 22/18 Arizona State Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Brown was all over the field in Illinois' upset victory over the Sun Devils. He had a hand in two of the three Illini takeaways, intercepting a Brock Osweiler pass in the third quarter and providing a big hit that that led to Glenn Foster's first-quarter interception. Brown also added seven tackles and had career highs with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. As a whole, the Fighting Illini defense had six sacks and 12 TFLs on the day while holding the high-powered ASU offense to just 14 points.
Other Big Ten weekly honorees this week include Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg (offensive), Minnesota running back Duane Bennett (special teams) and Indiana running back D'Angelo Roberts (freshman).
