Game-worn throwback helmets like this one are currently being auctioned here on FightingIllini.com.
Sept. 17, 2008
University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics officials announced Wednesday that the Dick Butkus-era throwback helmets worn by the Fighting Illini football team during the Illinois Renaissance celebration Sept.6 are being auctioned on fightingillini.com through Sept. 29. The 108 authentic, game-worn helmets are available immediately for fans to bid on.
These are the corresponding helmets of the jerseys and pants that were part of the auction that ended on September 15.
"We had a great response to the online auction of the throwback jerseys and pants," Assistant Athletic Director Marty Kaufmann said. "These helmets may even be more appealing to fans since they can easily be displayed on a desk, shelf, or bar. They will be a great piece of Fighting Illini history to own."
Fans can locate the auctions by clicking the "Auctions" link under the "Multimedia" menu on FightingIllini.com. Proceeds from the auctions will offset the cost of purchasing this entirely new set of uniforms for the Renaissance celebration game.
