CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois assistant director of bands Dr. Peter Griffin is pleased to announce the Marching Illini shows for the 2010 season. The Marching Illini is one the nation's premier college marching bands, annually performing at all Fighting Illini home football games. The unique style of the band represents a combination of time-honored traditions and exciting innovations.

"The Marching Illini is very proud of its musical traditions," Griffin said. "In many ways, we represent all Illini past, present and future. It is a responsibility not taken lightly. College bands are one of the things that make college football so unique. The pageantry, sounds and traditions of the bands make attending these games a special experience. This season, we feel we have a good variety of music for all ages and look forward to performing for our home audiences."

The university's 2010 Homecoming will be particularly special as it marks the 100th anniversary of Illinois' first Homecoming celebration back in 1910. The Marching Illini has something special planned for the historic anniversary.

"Our new Director of Bands, Dr. Robert Rumbelow, is composing a special fanfare to commemorate the 100th Homecoming at Illinois," Griffin said. "The world premiere will be performed by the Marching Illini and Alumni Band at Homecoming with the composer conducting. It will mark the first time ever that the alumni band and the Marching Illini will do a complete combined show for halftime. From start to finish, both bands will be on the field during halftime of the Homecoming show."

In addition to the spectacular shows by the Marching Illini each game, marching bands from Southern Illinois University (Sept. 11), Northern Illinois University (Sept. 18) and Purdue University (Oct. 30) also will be performing at Memorial Stadium this season.

"We are very excited to welcome and host bands from Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois and Purdue," Griffin said. "Each visiting band will present a pre-game and halftime show in addition to those presented by the Marching Illini. Having two bands at these three games will enhance the overall enjoyment of the event as each band performs and entertains the crowd with their various traditions and shows. We are very fortunate that these bands have chosen Illinois as their destination this year."
