There will be plenty of Zook Zone towels in the north endzone at Memorial Stadium this fall, thanks to the Block I organization.
Sept. 1, 2008
University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics officials announced Monday that Block I, the football student support group, has purchased 300 Zook Zone towels for its members to wave during Fighting Illini football games this fall. This continues the trend of the towels being a hot item, coming three days after the announcement that over 5,000 towels have already been sold.
"We want as many students to have them as possible so we can make it as rowdy as possible and set our stadium apart," Block I vice president Ryan Mraz said. "It's also a good chance for our organization to give back to the community because we want people to know that community service is important to Block I."
The Zook Zone towel is designed to help build energy and create a great home-field advantage at Memorial Stadium during the 2008 season. These towels will remain on sale throughout the season, but local fans are encouraged to purchase their Zook Zone towels prior to the Sept. 6 home opener in order to avoid long lines at Gameday Spirit stands outside the stadium. Towels can be found at both Gameday Spirit locations in Champaign for $7, with $1 from every towel going to help fight cancer through the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
Tickets for the Illinois Renaissance celebration game featuring the Fighting Illini and Eastern Illinois remain available. That contest marks the first time that fans can wave the Zook Zone towels at the newly renovated Memorial Stadium. The game features a salute to the greatest players in Illinois history with Dick Butkus, Jim Grabowski, Kevin Hardy and Dana Howard among the players scheduled to attend. Sideline seats are $45 and can be purchased at fightingillini.com, over the phone or in person while supplies last.
