Interviews: Coach Beckman | OC Cubit | QB Lunt

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After a scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, Illinois moved out to the grass practice fields east of the stadium for Wednesday's practice. But the move was short-lived as a strong storm moved through Champaign, forcing the Fighting Illini inside the Irwin Indoor Practice Facility for most of the workout.

Beckman Names Lunt Starting QB for Season-Opener
The news of the day came after practice when head coach Tim Beckman announced that redshirt-sophomore Wes Lunt will be Illinois' starting quarterback for the season-opener against Youngstown State on Aug. 30. Lunt, senior Reilly O'Toole and sophomore Aaron Bailey had been in a three-man battle for the starting spot throughout spring practice and fall camp.

Lunt started five games as a true-freshman at Oklahoma State in 2012 before becoming injured and missing the last four games of the regular season. A native of Rochester, Illinois, Lunt led the Rockets to IHSA Class 4A state titles in 2010 and 2011 on the Memorial Stadium turf.

Big Ten Network Bus Rolls Through Champaign
Also on Wednesday, the Big Ten Network bus swung through Champaign, making the final stop on its preseason tour of conference schools. Not only was BTN on hand for Beckman's quarterback announcement, but they were able to get a clearer picture of the Illini squad by seeing a practice only 10 days prior to the first game. In previous years, the network's visit has been earlier in preseason camp.

BTN studio hosts Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and former Illini running back Howard Griffith were on hand, along with BTN senior writer Tom Dienhart were on hand along with a full crew to watch practice then film segments for Wednesday's BTN Live show and BTN.com. BTN Live's Illini practice report airs at 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
