PRACTICE NOTES: The Illini took to the field in full pads for the second straight day for a spirited practice filled with hard-hitting plays during officiated team periods. The 80-degree temperatures and slight breeze were a much-appreciated break from the 90 degrees faced on Monday and Tuesday. In the first session of team work, Jameel Cook caught a short Kurt Kittner pass and turned it into a 62-yard touchdown and on the following play fullback Carlos Lattimore took a hand off from Dustin Ward into the endzone for a TD the same distance.
"Today was a good practice," head coach Ron Turner said. "There was a lot of intensity and good execution. This was the first dose of a real scrimmage we have had."
EVERYBODY'S ALL-AMERICA: With the success of an 8-4 season in 1999 comes expectations in 2000 and preseason accolades for the entire team. In May, senior offensive tackle Marques Sullivan was named a preseason Playboy All-American and earned a trip to Pheonix, Ariz., for a weekend with the other elite players. On the trip the players took part in a half-hour show featuring the 2000 Playboy Preseason All-America team. The show will be aired in four surrounding markets and the times and dates are as follows:
