CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois head coach Tim Beckman announced on Monday that offensive lineman Ryan Nowicki (Cactus HS/Glendale, Ariz.) has transferred to Illinois for the 2012 season after spending last season at Penn State University. Nowicki reported for training camp on Sunday along with the rest of the Illini and went through Monday morning's practice with his new teammates. He will be immediately eligible to play in 2012.
"This gives Ryan an opportunity to play at the state school of where he lived as a young boy," Beckman said. "Ryan grew up in Chicago and still has many family members living in the city. We are glad to have him on our team for this season, and we are excited to see him compete in Rantoul this week."
Nowicki redshirted last year at Penn State during his freshman season, meaning he will have four years of eligibility remaining at Illinois. Coming out of high school in 2010, the 6-5, 280-pound offensive tackle was ranked as the No. 31 prep tackle in the nation by Rivals.com. He was a three-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.
Nowicki was born in Elgin, Ill., and spent some of his childhood years in the Chicago area before his family moved to Arizona. Ryan's father, Christopher, played football at Purdue and his uncle, Charles, played at Ohio University.
