Much of Thursday was spent in meetings as the Illini prepared for pre-season training camp.
Aug. 2, 2007
A workout, meetings, completing paperwork, and for some, finishing up summer term final exams made for a full day for the 103 Fighting Illini players who reported today to pre-season camp.
The picture wasn't quite so dramatic as used to be the case years ago, when coaches would see very few of their players between the end of spring football and the beginning of camp in August. Essentially the entire team has spent the summer on campus--some working, some taking classes, but all working out in preparation for what is about to begin.
Coach Ron Zook's third Illinois football squad will hit the practice fields for the official start of the pre-season tomorrow afternoon in Champaign. The team will be divided in half for the first three days of practice (Friday, Saturday and Monday), in order to afford the maximum amount of instruction to the maximium number of players. Friday and Saturday's practice sessions will begin at 3:30 and 5:15 p.m.; the squad will spend the middle 45 minutes together (5:15-6 p.m.) working on special teams aspects of the game.
Sunday will be a transition day, as the players will be afforded the opportunity to go to church in the morning. Media Day activities will take place at Memorial Stadium from noon-2 p.m., and dinner will mark the start of Camp Rantoul-2007. Fans can LISTEN LIVE to Coach Ron Zook's address to the media at 12:30 p.m. CT
Following Monday's split practice sessions, the team will don full pads for the first time and go through a single workout starting at 3:30 p.m.
Camp Rantoul will continue through Saturday, Aug. 18. Fans are welcome to watch all pre-season practices. Since schedules and locations are subject to change, fans are urged to keep up with developments at www.CoachRonZook.com and www.fightingillini.com.
